The Linux Professional Institute's Linux Essentials exam is a great way to dive into the Linux world if you have no background in Linux. Christine and I worked on updating the Sybex Linux Essentials exam prep book (published in September), and I'm now facilitating the online Linux Essentials Exam Prep Course online class for Ed2Go.
